Policies and Regulations

Access to Campus Facilities

Most campus buildings and facilities are open to members of the campus community and guests during normal business hours, Monday through Saturday. Some buildings are open on Sundays for limited hours to facilitate special events.

After buildings have been secured, employees can obtain entry to an area if they have been issued the appropriate key or access card authorized for that area. Faculty and Staff may also request assistance in entering an area through the Public Safety department. Students may gain access to general areas after closing if an appropriate Administrator, Faculty or Staff member has submitted written approval to the Public Safety department. Identification will be required in the latter case.

Emergency Notification of Staff and Students

The Public Safety department will, on occasion, interrupt a class session to deliver a message to a student or staff member. The message content must be of an emergency nature, as determined by the Public Safety department staff, for an individual to be notified. At no time will the Public Safety department release any information regarding students or staff members, nor will the office divulge whether or not the person is a student or staff member. Requests for emergency notification should be made to the Public Safety Dispatcher at 734-973-3411.

Drug and Alcohol Policy

With the exception of certain circumstances, Washtenaw Community College does not permit the possession, consumption, use or sale of alcoholic beverages in any form on campus. The unlawful manufacture, distribution, dispensation, possession or use of a controlled substance on Campus property is strictly prohibited. Refer to the Student Handbook and Staff Manual for the full policy regarding the use of drugs and alcohol on campus. These policies detail disciplinary actions that may be taken by Washtenaw Community College against violators of this policy. The Board of Trustees web site contains the official Drug-Free Workplace policy as well as the Alcoholic Beverages on College Property, Use and Possession policy.

Weapons Possession

The Public Safety department enforces all federal, state and local statutes, as well as campus regulations pertaining to the possession and/or use of firearms, ammunitions, explosive devices, fireworks or other potentially lethal weapons. Weapons of any type are strictly prohibited in all areas of campus. Violations of these statues and regulations may result in disciplinary action as well as criminal prosecution.
